Barlybek Syrtanov’s wife is Yerkezhan Atalykovna (1868-1942)
Erkezhan Atalykovna is the wife of Barlybek Syrtanov. They had three children: sons – Abdulkadyr, Daribek and daughter – Hanifa. Erkezhan Atalykovna was a housewife. She comes from the Kapal Arasan area, belongs to the Tore Tolengit family. Her father Atalyk was a simple worker, a cow pass in his native village. Her mother is Kyrmyzy. She was a talented handmaiden.
In the archival documents there is the following information about the family situation of Syrtan Bakin during the relocation from the Arasan volost of the Kapal district to the village of Shelek, Vernensky district in 1888:
«… Barlybek – 22 years old, is educated at the Imperial University in St. Petersburg. His wife Erkezhan is 20 years old.” According to this information, it can be assumed that Erkezhan was born in 1868.
Erkezhan, although she did not have a special education, was very well educated and was able to become the wonderful wife of Barlybek Syrtanov. At one time, Erkezhan Atalykovna collected and preserved the books of her husband B. Syrtanov. As a result, she handed over to the Kainar mosque near the village of Kapal about 2,000 books in Arabic, Persian, Kazakh and Russian, which she collected all her life. There is information that these books were once used by the famous writer Ilyas Zhansugurov.
After the death of Barlybek, Yerkezhan was investigated and taken into custody. She was even closed twice in the prison of the village of Kapal.
Barlybek Syrtanov and Yerkezhan Atalykovna had children Zubaid, Latipa, Abdulkadyr, Daribek, Kyzyrbek, Kanipa, Salikha. In Soviet times, they were forced to change their names, thanks to which they avoided political persecution and held senior positions.
Son of Barlybek Syrtanov – Abdulkadyr
Abdulkadyr Barlybekuly Syrtanov was able to read and write from the age of six. In Almaty, he studied for two years at the Ilham Baya Muslim school, six years at the gymnasium, but in 1912 for certain reasons he could not graduate from the gymnasium. In June-July 1918, Soviet power was temporarily created in the Aksu district. At that time, Abdulkadyr passed cattle in the village, from 1920 to 1958 he worked and retired in 1958. In 1920, he worked as a member and secretary of the village committee of Aksu district. In Aksu, he worked as the organizer of the Kazakh-Tatar amateur art club, developed his repertoire and staged performances. In 1921, Abdulkadir was drafted into the army. From January to December 1922, he served as chairman of the executive committee in Kapal. He was engaged in the education and construction of schools. Since September 1923, he was a people’s judge in Kapal. In 1925, he was a member of the board of the regional court of Almaty, from 1926 to April 1928 – commissioner of the regional court of Zharkent, now Panfilov, and judge of the Zharkent district. From April to December 1928 he served as deputy judge of the Almaty Provincial Court. Abdulkadyr Barlybekuly was awarded diplomas for good service in judicial activities. In December 1928 he resigned from the judiciary and worked as the 2nd deputy head of the Ili River Station. He resigned in August.
Abdulkadyr Barlybekovich wrote in his manuscript: “Since then, I have taken an active part in organizing the collective farm, visiting the areas under the control of the 3rd village of Aksu “Suttigen” and the 3rd village. In October 1930 (certificate available) he arrived in Almaty, got a job in a city transport organization, graduated from a 6-month course of a vulcanize driver, which first opened in Kazakhstan. Since July 1933 he taught at a driving school for the study of cars and street traffic in the city, and from July 10, 1958 he was retired. In 1920, I participated in party work, and in 1924 became a member of the party. In 1930, I left the party for certain reasons. Of course, the past and the present cannot be compared. I’ve been under investigation and control for a long time. I found out only in 1956, when I was informed that I had been relieved of control.”
Wife – Syrtanova Gulish Orazbekkyzy, she is 66 years old. Together with his wife, they raised and raised three sons, three daughters. The eldest daughter works as a doctor at the Karaganda Eye Institute and teaches at the medical institute. The middle daughter works as a doctor in the village of Kegen. The youngest daughter is to study in the last year of the Almaty Medical Institute. The eldest son works in the Council of Ministers, the middle son works as a teacher-instructor in a driving school. The youngest son is Deputy Ministry of Motor Transport. All of them are family, except for the youngest daughter, grandchildren grow up.

Abdulkadyr Barlybekovich knew and closely communicated with the Kazakh intelligentsia such as M. Auezov, I. Zhansugurov, F. Gabitova, O. Zhandosov, Kanabek, Kulyash Bayseitova.
Barlybek Syrtanov’s son Daribek
Daribek is the youngest son of Barlybek Syrtanov. The wife of Daribek Syrtanov is Gulsum. Gulsum Yusupovna Syrtanova (nee Yangalycheva, a native of Kopal, was born in 1898 or 1899 in Almaty, husband – Syrtanov Daribek, sons: Samurat (Soviet general, lived in Moscow), Talgat (military pilot), daughter – Sara (according to some sources of Farida). Talgat and Samurat participated in the Great Patriotic War. Samurat Daribekuly is one of the first six generals of the Kazakhs. Samurat made a huge contribution to the development of the armed forces of the Soviet Union.
Salikha Barlybekovna Syrtanova (years of life and death unknown)
Salikha Barlybekovna was married to Shamai Shinasylov, an honorary citizen who sacrificed himself for the sake of the people. Salikha’s dowry was accompanied by B. Syrtanov’s books, which he once bought with his scholarship in St. Petersburg.
Kanipa Barlybekovna Syrtanova (years of life and death unknown)
Barlybek Syrtanov’s granddaughter Mugulsim Abdulkadyrovna said in an interview: “According to my grandmother Yerkezhan, my father’s sister Kanipa was afraid of spies and buried all her father’s property. But a few years later, these burials were again excavated and handed over to the researcher Saken Uzbekov.”
Grandchildren of Barlybek Syrtanov
Mugulsim Abdulkadyrovna in her interview: “Many grandchildren of Barlybek chose medicine and became doctors. I am an ophthalmologist. I was a teacher at the Karaganda Institute. My sister Asiya is also a doctor, an associate professor at a medical institute, a candidate of medical sciences. My eldest son is also a doctor, head of the department of the Karaganda Medical Institute – a scientist.
Barlybek’s grandchildren also made a great contribution to the development of our country. For example, Sara Daribekovna was the Deputy Minister of Communications, Samed Abdulkadyrovich was the Deputy Minister of Road Transport, Tole Abdulkadyrovich was the Deputy Minister of Gas, and Samurat Daribekovich was one of the first Kazakh generals. In general, many descendants of Barlybek work in the field of science, defending academic degrees.
In one of the documents found in the personal archive of the famous writer, local historian Tanirbergen Kalilakhanov, in his diary Kake (Abdulkadyr) Barlybekovich wrote the following lines: “The eldest daughter works as a doctor at the Karaganda Eye Institute and teaches at the Medical Institute. The middle daughter works as a doctor in the village of Kegen, a member of the Komsomol. The youngest daughter is a member of the Komsomol; she is in her last year at the Almaty Medical Institute. The eldest son works in the Council of Ministers; the middle son works as a teacher-instructor at a driving school. The youngest son is the Deputy Minister of Road Transport. They are all family people, except for the youngest daughter, my grandchildren are growing up, and the youngest goes to kindergarten.
Grandson of Barlybek Syrtanov – Samurat (1924)
Samurat Daribekovich Syrtanov was born on February 23, 1924 in the village of Aksu, Taldykorgan region. He was a major general. In 1941 he studied at the Moscow Aviation Institute, graduated from the Podolsk Artillery School. In 1941-1945, Senior Lieutenant Samurat Daribekovich Syrtanov became the commander of the battery of the 867th Simferopol Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment. He took part in the Orel-Kursk operation, in the liberation of southern Ukraine, Crimea, the Baltic States, Romania and Czechoslovakia. In 1952, Samurat Daribekovich graduated from the engineering faculty of the Military Academy of Armored and Mechanized Troops. Since 1952, he was in the tank and engine repair service, at the headquarters of the Soviet troops in Germany, held the positions of deputy division commander for equipment, deputy head of the auto-tractor service of the Turkestan military district and was its chief. S. Syrtanov was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st and 2nd degree, the Order of the Red Star.
Granddaughter of Barlybek Syrtanov – Mugulsim
Mugulsim Kadyrovna (Abdulkadyrovna) Syrtanova is the granddaughter of one of the theoretical founders of the Alash movement, the author of the first Kazakh constitutional work, Barlybek Syrtanov. Mugulsim Abdulkadyrovna Syrtanova (in some sources the surname is indicated as Svertanova) is a highly qualified doctor and scientist who has made an immeasurable contribution to the development of medicine in the country. She was excellent in the field of healthcare in the USSR. She cured many patients and performed the most complex operations.
From the moment of her birth, Mugulsim Kadyrovna, according to the original Kazakh traditions, was brought up by her grandmother Yerkezhan.
