Toktabayev Karim (Gabdul-Karim) Doschanovich (1892 – 1936)

Toktabayev Karim is a teacher, public figure, a member of the Torgay Council of Alash Orda, a delegate of the V-VII Kazakhstan conferences of the CPSU (b).

He was born in the Chobulan Parish of the Turgay County in the family of a parish governor, Kazakh. He was a member of the Communist Party since 1922. In 1909 he graduated from a teacher’s school in Orenburg.

In 1909-1912 he worked as a teacher in the Tusun parish school. In 1912-1919 Toktabayev was in charge of the Russian class at the madrasah of Turgay, taught mathematics and physics at the Turgay Higher Primary School. In 1919-1921 he was an employee of the Semipalatinsk provincial department of public education, head of the Akmola regional department of public education. Karim Doschanovych in 1921-1922 was a Commissioner for Food Kokchetav County, commissioner of the Red Caravan KazCIK. From October 1922 to March 1924 he was a Deputy People’s Commissar of Education and head of the Main Directorate of Political and Educational Work of the KASSR. In 1924-1925 he was a Head of the Main Department of Land Management of the People’s Commissariat of Agriculture of the KASSR. In 1925-1927 he was the chairman of the Semipalatinsk province executive committee. From March to December 1927 he was People’s Commissar of Education of the KASSR. From December 1927 to September 1931 he was People’s Commissar of Agriculture of the KASSR. In 1931-1933 he was a Representative of the KASSR at the All-Russian Central Executive Committee. Since June 1933 he was the head of the subsidiary farm “Degheres” in the Almaty region.

He was repressed and arrested in October 1933, convicted of 5 years of forced labor camps in April 1934; in May 1934 the sentence was changed with deportation to Voronezh. He died in exile. He was rehabilitated in January 1958.
